The Cabynet beta

Own your data.

Your family's files shouldn't depend on a company, a subscription, or one person's password.

Cabynet keeps your family archive organized, accessible, and ready for whoever needs it — today or generations from now.

No more…

  • “Cloud storage is full.”
  • “Searching your email for important files.”
  • Twenty copies of the same photo.
  • Losing your files when you stop paying for storage.
  • Getting locked out of a late loved-one's images.
  • Wondering whether your photos are training someone's AI.

What you get

Your files at home. Accessible anywhere.

Browse your Cabynet from your phone or laptop, with thumbnails and built-in previews for photos, PDFs, and text files. Open or download anything, wherever you are.

Automatic backups

Choose which folders on your phone to back up, and where each one goes in your Cabynet. New photos head home on their own. On iPhone, an evening reminder makes sure the day's photos make it.

One family Cabynet. Hardware you choose.

Run it on a Windows PC or a Mac you already own, with files on its own disk or an external drive. Add phones and laptops for everyone in the house.

Folders for everyone

Each phone backs up into the folders you pick for it, so everyone's photos land in their own place instead of one big pile.

Duplicates, consolidated

Copies of the same file are condensed automatically, and the activity log shows exactly what happened, along with who added what and where.

Encrypted, end to end

Files are encrypted on your device before they leave it. They never travel the internet unencrypted, and nothing in between can read them, us included.

How Cabynet works

Install Cabynet on the computer where your family's files should live, a Windows PC or a Mac, and choose Cabynet. That computer is now your family's Cabynet.

Then install it on everyone's phones and other computers and choose Companion. Companions back up, browse, and send files home securely from anywhere, while everything stays right where it belongs: in your own house.

Installing Cabynet doesn't turn your home computer into a server open to the internet. It connects only to Cabynet's encrypted relay, so no one connects directly to your computer and there's no router setup to do.

Recommended setup

Cabynet runs on a Windows PC or Mac that stays on at home, with your files on a drive plugged into it. If you already have a computer you're comfortable leaving on, great, use it. Otherwise, here's a setup that gets you started quickly and easily.

Why a hard drive? Hard drives hold your files reliably for years, even sitting on a shelf, and they cost far less for the space than other kinds of drives.
